The Bible: A Detailed Outline
Legend:
† Pentateuch (Torah)- Often called the Law of Moses or the Five Books of Moses, these narrate creation, the patriarchs, the Exodus, and foundational covenant laws:
† Historical Books - Detail the history of Israel’s entrance into the Promised Land, the era of judges, the establishment of the monarchy, the division of the kingdom, the exiles, and the initial period of restoration under Persian rule.
† Poetry/Wisdom Books - Also referred to as “Writings” (in part), these include poetic prayers, songs, philosophical reflections, and wisdom maxims.
† Major Prophets - Longer prophetic works (by length of text, not importance) addressing Israel/Judah and surrounding nations, spanning pre-exilic, exilic, and early post-exilic contexts.
† Minor Prophets (The Twelve) - Twelve shorter prophetic books addressing various time periods (pre-exilic, exilic, post-exilic). They share themes of covenant faithfulness, judgment, and future hope:
